About Pretanic Press

Our Story

Our logo features the earliest known map of Britain and Ireland, a 15th century copy of one made by the Greek geographer, Ptolemy, in the 2nd century CE. The earliest recorded name for those who lived there is Pretani, ‘Painted People.’

Founded in June, 2022, our aim is to publish works on pagan traditions active in the Pretanic Isles from prehistory to the present day. To this end, publications will cover archaeology, history, mythology, Medieval literature, 19th century folklore, previous pagan revivals and present-day practice. Traditions covered will include ‘Celtic’ paganism and Druidry, Anglo-Saxon and Norse heathenism, magic, Witchcraft and Wicca.

Our ethos

All those directly involved in Pretanic Press are Pagans. This naturally gives us some insight into what fellow Pagans want to read and how best to present it. Like most Pagans, we are fiercely independent. As publishers, this independence means that we focus far more on sheer quality than mere quantity. In other words, our intention is to educate and inform rather than accumulate personal wealth. It also allows us the freedom to produce books the way we think they should be produced, with excellent content backed by equally fine design, layout, cover images, internal illustrations, paper quality and overall feel while still keeping cost to readers as low as possible and paying our authors a decent premium for their work.

As the publishing arm of the British Druid Order (BDO), we share its not-for-profit ideals. Therefore, profits over and above running costs go to our authors or to support the educational and spiritual work of the BDO.

The Best Authors

Our aim is for every book we publish to be by a respected authority on its subject.

Quality Publications

Our books will maintain a consistent high quality in design, layout, readability, illustrations, printing and binding.

Low Cost, High Value

By keeping production costs as low as we can consistent with quality, our aim is to bring readers the best possible books at the lowest possible price.
